Questa bianca piazza è dedicata alla famiglia Petrone che vi ha dimorato fino al 1948, quando un terremoto rese il palazzo pericolante e crollarono alcune case fatiscenti. Lo spazio ricavato divenne allora una grande terrazza sul mare che affaccia sul la costa meridionale di Vieste. Negli anni 1998 – 2004 la Piazzetta Petrone ogni estate si trasformava in un cinema all’aperto per il Vieste Film Festival con ospiti anche di caratura internazionale. Il panorama che si ammira in questo luogo spazia dalla lunga Spiaggia del Castello con una splendida veduta sul Pizzomunno fino alla Testa de Gargano, la penisola che gli antichi indicavano come il confine tra il Mar Adriatico e il Mar Jonio. Lungo la spiaggia invece le strutture ricettive hanno preso posto della campagna che era sfruttata per la coltivazione di ortaggi, pomodori e per la produzione del vino. Nel Periodo medievale l’Imperatore Federico II di Svevia, per rendere più fiorente la zona che era invasa dal mare fece trasformare quest’area in un salina.

This white square is dedicated to the Petrone family who lived there until 1948, when an earthquake made the located buildings dangerous and collapsed some crumbling houses. The resulting space then became a large terrace overlooking the southern coast of Vieste. In the years 1998 – 2004 the Piazzetta Petrone was transformed into an outdoor cinema for the Vieste Film Festival with guests of international calibre. The view here ranges from the long Castle beach with a splendid view from Pizzomunno to the Testa del Gargano, the peninsula that the ancients referred to as the border between the Adriatic Sea and the Ionian one. Along the beach, instead, the accommodations have taken the place of the countryside that was used for the cultivation of vegetables, tomatoes and for the production of wine. In the Middle Ages, Emperor Frederick II of Swabia transformed this area from a swamp into a salt mine.
